Cardio in this instance is shortened cardiological, so it relates to the heart, and means very plainly aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercises use the muscles for a relatively extended time; make the heart labor more to cause the blood to get moving faster than normal so the body tissues use oxygen as fuel in oxydizing carbohydrates and fat. For many people habitually doing aerobic exercises, a home gym of fitness equipment elliptical style, some light gym fitness equipment or workout equipment is the way to go. However, many people choose simple brisk walking, slow running, paddling or two-player sports like table or lawn tennis.
Repeated aerobic exercises help the individual in several ways:
• Improves the breathing muscles for improved air flow in and out of the lungs. It provides the body higher oxygen volume and better blood constitution via higher numbers of red blood cells.
• Enlarges and builds up the heart tissues, improving pumping efficiency and blood movement while reducing the resting heart rate. This is called aerobic conditioning and is the intended effect of aerobic exercises, hence the label cardio. This also improves blood circulation to reduce blood pressure and improves the cardiovascular condition.
• Reduces overall stress and enhances mental health, including less depression vulnerability.
• Increases bone growth and thus reduces the risk of brittle bones.
• Lowers such as diabetes, stroke, some cancers and common ailments like flu and colds.
• Opens up the arteries by reducing bad cholesterol (LDL: low density lipoprotein) levels and increases those of good cholesterol (HDL or high density lipoproteins).
•
However, aerobic exercising to be useful must have least amounts, time length of exercise and frequency. Expertsrecommend twenty minutes of exercise should be done at minimum of three times a week. Else it will have no benefit on the body as whatever gains were made during the exercise will be shed in the no-exercise intervals.
Another form of aerobic exercise very popular in the past years is the aerobics, group exercises involving quick steps and body motion led by an instructor and performed freestyle or choreographed in synchronization with the tempo of music, making it more pleasurable in the process. This was distinctly liked by women, especially when stars like Jane Fonda, Judi Sheppard Missett and Richard Simmons endorsed it through videos and television programs. Many aerobics rooms use wall-size mirrors to let the trainees to discern if what they are doing is correct, much like training rooms for ballet dancers and other performers.
Among the other popular forms of aerobic exercise are tennis, jogging, badminton, tae bo which uses the motions in martial arts, and recently, the NIA or non-impact aerobics, also known as neuromuscular integrative action, which avoids body damage from high-impact aerobic exercises.
Aerobic training is intended to improve and develop the body through regular, low-intensity training which compels the tissues to give up their stored carbohydrates and fat for oxydation. It is not intended for quick muscle build-up of the no-pain, no-gain variety. Thus there are at all times aerobic exercises for all, at any age, at any condition.
